Help!

Today's Verse:

Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man. ~Psalm 108:12

Our Scripture this morning is found in Psalm 60 and Psalm 108. David found himself at a very overwhelming moment and was calling on the Lord for help. When we boil down our most difficult experiences, we realize that God is the only Person Who can help us. God is there at all times to help us, but it is up to us call on Him.

We see the formidable rival.

The Edomites had positioned themselves as a threat to David’s kingdom. As he assessed their size, strength, and where they dwelt, David knew that he was in a very difficult situation. However, without difficulties we become overconfident in our ability, and we think that we can solve our problems. Overconfidence leads to a proud and conceited attitude. Difficulties cause us to realize our inadequacy and weakness. David was in a tough spot.

We see the fervent request.

“Give us help from trouble.” David was a man of war. He was a soldier at heart and a military strategist. He was a man of bravery and courage. However, he was a spiritual man. He called on the Lord to help him in time of trouble. The best praying that we do is when we are in trouble. A nobleman came from Capernaum to see Jesus at Cana on behalf of his son who was at the point of death. He prayed, “Sir, come down ere my child die.” A man had a son who was demon-possessed since he was a little child. He came to Jesus and cried out, “Help me!” A Gentile woman who lived in Tyre and Sidon came to Jesus and sought His help for her daughter who was demon-possessed. She, too, cried out, “Lord, help me!” Whatever your problem or difficulty, make the Lord your first resort for help. David knew that he could not overcome the foe without God. We cannot overcome our foe without God’s help.

We see the frank realization.

“For vain is the help of man.” David knew that manpower was not the secret to victory. He realized he needed God’s power to be victorious. We must come to the realization that the help of man will not get us out of our difficulties and problems. Many Christians come to a rude awakening that man’s knowledge, ability, and resources will fail them in their most critical moment. However, God Who is all-powerful and all-knowing never fails us. Have you become so dependent upon the help of man, that you rarely consider the Lord to help you?

We see the faith resolution.

“Through God we shall do valiantly: for he it is that shall tread down our enemies.” David overwhelmingly defeated the Edomites by the hand of the Lord. We are not given the exact details of how God gave the victory through David’s general, Joab, but we know it is recorded as a monumental victory. The Edomites were overcome in the Valley of Salt. David asserted his faith was entirely in the Lord. David gave God the glory for the victory ahead of time. David made a public proclamation that every battle can only be won through God.

God is there to help us. We must determine that we will seek His help in our life for everything. No victory is attainable without God’s help. Man’s help is in vain. “Through God we shall do valiantly.”

Have a confident God Morning!
