A Defining Moment

Today's Verse:

And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause? ~1 Samuel 17:29

David was sent to the battlefield by his father to bring some food to his brothers and to check on their welfare. He had no idea that on that day, he would have an encounter that would change the tide of the battle. He did not know that on that day, he would be elevated in the sight of all Israel. David asked the question, “Is there not a cause?” Aren’t we here to win? Aren’t we God’s people with God’s power? Is there not a cause? David would have a defining moment on that day.

We see David and his virtuous innocence.

David was the youngest of eight brothers. Our first introduction to him is that he was the youngest son who kept the sheep. He is described in appearance as "ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to." When his father sent him out, he was dressed in his shepherd garments. David was a young man whom his father trusted. David was a young man who had proven his integrity, courage, and dependability in the fields of Bethlehem taking care of his father’s sheep. He represented cleanliness, purity, and freshness. The soldiers of Israel were discouraged and saw no hope. David came to them possessed with a spirit of adventure and invigoration. David did not come to that field with the idea that he would enter the battle. He came as a simple servant doing what his father bade him to do.

We see David and his vehement indignation.

While David was on the battlefield, the giant Goliath came out and issued a challenge for a man to face him. It was the 40th time that such a challenge was made. All of the men of Israel heard this challenge and were sore afraid. David, upon hearing this challenge for the first time, was filled with astonishment and indignation. Who does this uncircumcised Philistine think he is? Is there a reward for the man who takes him down? David was filled with indignation that this giant dared to challenge the men of Israel and to blaspheme the name of God. Do the giants of this world stir indignation within you? Do the shouts of sin and sinful behavior stir you for the glory of God?

We see David and his vigorous inspiration.

David was immediately rebuked by his oldest brother. His motive was questioned for being there. However, David was a man who was greatly inspired. “What have I now done? Is there not a cause?” David was burning within his heart a desire for God’s righteousness. David was inspired for the glory of God. David was inspired to win the battle. In the midst of a large battalion of discouraged soldiers, David gave inspiration. He had a cause! Winning souls is a cause. The holiness of God is a cause. Seeing men called as preachers and missionaries sent out to foreign soil is a cause. Starting churches is a cause. Staying faithful to your spouse and marriage is a cause. Raising children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord is a cause. A cause inspires you. A cause stirs you to action. A cause is what you live for. A cause is what you die for. The Lord Jesus Christ is my cause. “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

We see David and the victoriously inconceivable.

The cause that inspired David led to the inconceivable. He felled the giant with the sling of a round, smooth stone. He beheaded the giant and became the rallying cry for victory that day. His inspired soul led Israel to defeat the Philistines. Nothing great ever happens without a cause. David had a defining moment.

Do you have a cause? Does your cause inspire you? Does your cause stir you? Read your Bible, get on your knees, pray to God, look up to Heaven, and get a cause. Have a cause that becomes your defining moment!

Have an inspired God Morning!
