Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. ~Psalm 46:10
A few years ago, my wife and I went to visit a family that had several children under the age of five. These children were very unruly, undisciplined, and noisy. In order to gain control of the noisy situation, I asked the children if I could play a game with them. I requested that they sit on the living room couch. I promised a prize for the child who would remain silent and not utter any noise or word for ten minutes. I also challenged them by telling them that the one who made any noise would have to restart the countdown. If they broke the rule of silence more than twice, then they would have to stand alone in a corner with their hands over their eyes. Believe it or not, these children became still and silent! Only one child eventually won, but all of them realized that they could be still! Our devotion this morning calls us to remain still and know Who God is.
By this very fact, it is an acknowledgement that there is no other God but God. There is one God, and His name is Elohim. He is the Creator of Heaven and earth and all that is therein. He is eternal, with no beginning and no ending. He is matchless, mighty, and majestic. He is God and God alone! He is sinless, sovereign, and supreme. He is God Who is Judge, but He is also God Who is gracious and merciful. He is God of the mountain, but He is also God of the valley. He is God, and none compares to Him. He is God Who never fails. “Be still, and know that I am God.”
“I will be exalted among the heathen....” The heathen refers to the nations of the world. Dictators are madmen who believe that they are gods. They seek to control the mind and will of the people through manipulation, persecution, and execution. They have a hatred towards God and any belief in God. They blaspheme God’s name and attempt to make themselves great. However, God is greater! He is greater than the military might and devious methods of these nations. God will be exalted among the heathen. The day will come when the heathen calls Jesus "Lord and King." The day is coming when the heathen will realize that they are powerless and nothing before God. They will plead for mercy on the Day of Judgment, but it will be too late. God is greater and will be exalted among the heathen.
“I will be exalted in the earth.” All creation acknowledges Who God is. God is to be worshiped and adored. What a wonderful thing when on the Lord’s Day, true, biblical churches assemble for the worship of God through special music and preaching. God is exalted when we sing from our heart. God is exalted when we serve Him with our gifts. God is exalted when we win souls to Christ through evangelism and witnessing. God is exalted when God’s people have a spirit of unity. He is glorious! He is worshiped when we bring our gifts to Him. One day, all that is in the earth will acknowledge and worship God!
Let’s be still and know that He is God! Let’s slow down, let’s make time, and let’s realize that He is God and God alone.
