I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts. ~Psalm 119:63
We have a saying that says, “Birds of a feather flock together.” This means we have friendships with people who share similar beliefs and practices as we do. The Bible in Amos 3:3 says something similar in asking, “Can two walk together, except they be agreed?” This morning, we are looking at a vital biblical principle concerning our associations and friendships.
The psalmist was experiencing grief and affliction from the ungodly who rejected God and His Word. He faced constant ridicule and scorn for his beliefs. He realized that he found his comfort and encouragement from those who shared the same beliefs and practices concerning the Lord. As believers, we must realize that the closest and most reliable friendships we will have in this world are those friendships that fear the Lord and keep His Word. These are people who share the same convictions about God, His Word, His church, and His plan for the world. This does mean that we isolate ourselves from those who are not believers, and instead we are closest in relationship and involvement with God’s people.
Our associations must have sameness. Daniel and his three friends possessed the same conviction that they would not defile themselves with the king’s meat in Babylon. Your friendships can make or break you. They will bring you closer to God or farther from Him. “Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.” The preachers I am closest to are men whom I share a sameness in. They are men of faith, vision, and desire for God’s power to abound in their lives. They are God-fearing men who love His Word.
When we have strong spiritual friendships, there is immense protection for us. We are fortified in the convictions that we hold. We are inspired to do more for the Lord. We strive to advance God’s kingdom ad win the lost to Christ. We realize that godly fellowship leads to lives that draw closer to God and not farther. We are on praying ground and see God working through our associated praying. We discover that God blesses us with happiness and contentment.
Yes, birds of a feather flock together. “He that walketh with wise men shall be wise.” We are blessed because we have chosen to not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the way of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scornful. Choose your associations carefully and wisely. Choose friendships that stir you for God and lead you to a closer walk with Him.
