Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. ~Jeremiah 33:3
Sometimes when I have sought someone out in an area that I need help in, they will conclude their presentation by saying, “If you need anything further, just give a call.” A statement like that is an encouraging reinforcement that he is there to give me ongoing help. I may not know when I might need to call, but I am encouraged that I have been given this standing invitation. This morning, we are considering a well-known promise of God for every Christian. We are invited to take advantage of an unrestricted resource that God gives to His children. This morning, let us take advantage of the invitation to call on God.
Jeremiah was shut up in the court of the prison. He was being held against his will and terribly slandered for preaching the truth of God’s Word. He had seen the fulfillment of the Babylonian slaughter and captivity in Jerusalem. It could be that he was languishing in his spiritual life because of his circumstances. It could be that his praying became stale and lacking closeness to God. When discouragement hits us, it takes the wind out of our sails. It takes the smile off of our face. It steals the joy that is in our heart. It places a shadow of doubt and second-guessing in our minds. We all get discouraged and we have to be careful to not let it dominate us for a lengthy period of time.
The Word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the second time. God came to Jeremiah when he needed to hear from God badly. God gave Jeremiah one of the most powerful promises for prayer by way of a directive. “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.” God was directing Jeremiah to enter into His holy presence and to get Him involved in his problem. It was like a doctor telling his patient, "Just call me." It was like a parent who is thousands of miles away telling his children, "Just call me." When we are discouraged, depleted, disadvantaged, or defeated, what we need to do most is call on God. Just call! Tell the Lord what is on your heart. Ask the Lord for divine intervention. In faith, call on God to change you and the circumstances you are in. Calling on God is something every person can do and do well.
God told Jeremiah that his prayers will be answered and he will be shown great and mighty things which he could not imagine. God gave Jeremiah a sneak preview of the answers that he would experience. The Jews would return to Jerusalem and resettle there. Their sins would be pardoned and forgiven. The voice of joy would be heard in that city again. There would be prosperity and peace once again. Their foes would be turned back from oppressing them. However, preceding these blessings is the need for God’s man to step out in faith and ask God for these things. God said His answers would be through great and mighty things that Jeremiah could not imagine. These great and mighty things are the supernatural hand of God making things happen that human means cannot.
Just like Jeremiah, we have this same directive exhorting us to pray great prayers of faith. We must imagine the impossible being possible. We must pray for God to change the unchangeable. We must believe in faith that God can and will perform those good things that will bring Him glory.
Don’t let your circumstances or discouragement limit God. Make a call, and ask specifically for a mighty intervention from God in your life.
