Counting the Days

Today's Verse:

So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. ~Psalm 90:12

The superscription to Psalm 90 is that it is a prayer of Moses. Moses was filled with a great awe concerning the eternality of God. This psalm was most likely written in the later years of his life during the wilderness wanderings. In this psalm, he was praying for God to be merciful upon the Israelites. This psalm is about the days in this life that they had left. It is about making each remaining day that we have count for God. 

We see the awareness of our days. 

Moses was acutely aware that the days we have in this life are short. He said, “We spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength they be fourscore years, yet is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cutoff, and we fly away.” We must awaken to the fact that life is very short. Our opportunities must be taken advantage of. Our time with loved ones passes quickly. Our strength lessens as each year goes by. We watch as some pass on from this life before us and we are seized with the reality of our own mortality. Babies are born, children become adults, adults enter into old age, our days are soon cut off, and we fly away. Beloved, time is short! Our days are few and fleeting. 

We see the accounting for our days. 

There are the wrongful choices. “Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins in the light of thy countenance.” Sin is always a choice that we make. Israel had open and secret sins. Israel openly rebelled against God and Moses. They demonstrated their lack of faith in God’s commandments and promises. They flagrantly worshiped a golden calf and danced around it in shameful nakedness. Many of them fell into sins of immorality. Their secret sins were the constant murmuring and complaining. There was the wrathful chastening. God chastened Israel for their unbelief, rebellion, murmuring, and idolatries. Moses felt the pressure of God’s wrath on the people. Beloved, we cannot hide our sins from God. All sin will be accounted for in this life. 

We see the application for our days. 

Moses realizes he cannot change, alter, or reverse past failures. However, he prayed that the remaining days would be wisely spent. He asked the Lord to teach them to number their days that they might apply their hearts unto wisdom. First, pray for a fresh vision for your remaining days. We must have a vision for what we should be doing for the glory of God. Second, live out the remaining days in faithful virtue. Live out those days with thankfulness, holiness, peace, and closeness to God. Third, live out those days with a fiery vitality. Aim for worthy accomplishments. Make your to-do list a “done list.” Live each day, and approach each project with enthusiasm. Don’t allow disappointment and setback to rob your days of strength.  

Let’s count our days and make each day productive and well lived. Make each day a special day. Let each day be an opportunity to do something great for God and for others. Let the beauty of our Lord God be upon us and ask the Lord to let the work of our hands be established. Pray for wisdom beyond your experience and intelligence. Let each remaining day be a faith day and a fulfilling day!
