And Moses stretched forth his hand toward heaven; and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days: ~Exodus 10:22
And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. ~John 3:19
Whenever a person is clueless or uninformed about a matter, we might refer to this person as "being in the dark." This person has no idea what is being discussed or had been decided upon. When you are in the dark, you are at a terrible disadvantage. When you are in the dark, you are vulnerable to getting hurt. This morning, are you in the dark?
Darkness is when there is no light or illumination. When things are pitch black, the human eye is unable to see anything. In darkness, you can only rely on your sense of hearing and touching. Where there is darkness, all sense of awareness is gone. There is no beauty in darkness. Nocturnal animals and insects thrive in darkness. Darkness is when you can be at a disadvantage. Darkness occurs when night comes. Darkness is darkest when all forms of light and illumination are removed.
There is fear in darkness. Little children and adults are scared of the dark. Scientifically, a person who is in darkness for an extended period of time will become blind due to their pupils having no exposure to light. Darkness is when heinous crimes and atrocities occur. Darkness is a picture of sin. Jesus said, "Men loved darkness rather than light." People who live in sin would rather stay in the darkness than to be in the light. Darkness leads to accidents and falls. A person can die of thirst and hunger if they are stuck in darkness for a long period of time. Darkness can be harmful to your health and life. Darkness can lead to your death. Remaining in spiritual darkness will result in a sinner being condemned to Hell for all of eternity.
Can you imagine being trapped in a dark, cold cavern and trying to find your way out? However, when even a small trail of light is discovered, the person trapped in the darkness will follow that little thread of light with the hope that it will lead them to safety. Imagine the happiness and relief to come out of a darkened cavern. All fear vanishes away, and hope is restored. Once again, you can see and find your way. The release from darkness begins when a sinner places his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ as his Savior. Jesus is the Light of the world. When a person gets saved, he is forever in the light. From that point forward, Christians should walk as children of the light. This implies that we are to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness. This means we should do only those deeds that are done in the light and none of darkness. We are to allow the Word of God to be a light unto our feet and the light unto our path. The light of God’s Word lightens our path and guides us each step of our pilgrim way. So, a person must first come out of the darkness. Then, he should stay out of the darkness.
Are you in the dark when it comes to your fellowship with God? Are you in the dark when it comes to God’s will for your life? Are you in the dark when it comes to victory over sin? Are you in the dark when it comes to a trial you are in? You don’t have to stay there! Jesus said that the people who were in darkness saw great light! Come out of the darkness, and walk in the light as He is in the light. Let God be the light of your path and of your life.
