In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return. ~Genesis 3:19
God told Adam, “For dust thou art....” Can you fathom the thought that we are made of dust? We are told that God made man from the dust of the earth. In reality, we are just dirt bags! However, I am thankful that when God made man from dust, He breathed into him the breath of life. Our very being and existence comes from God. God told Adam, “From dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.” Let us see this morning the reality of going from dust to dust.
In Psalm 139, we are told that we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and we are! We are the master genius and creation of God! God breathed into man and made him a living soul. He made us with a purpose in mind. “What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” God made us to have fellowship with Him. God made us to glorify Him. We are God’s prized creation. God loves us, knows us, and desires to be involved in every detail of our life. We see our created makeup.
“Unto dust shalt thou return.” We must come to grips that we are mortal beings with a finite physical existence. “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” We are born into this world with a sin nature. That sin nature has the condemnation of God upon it. We will die one day. We don’t have very long in this life. We should pray, “Teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” If you die unsaved, you will spend all of eternity in Hell. We see our condemned mortality.
First, we must realize that God wants all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. God wants everyone to be saved. His gift of salvation is free to everyone who believes that Jesus died for their sin and satisfied all of God’s demands for the payment of sin. Salvation is by grace through faith in Christ alone. Second, we must seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Our priority after we are saved is to live for the glory of God. We are to love God with all of our heart, our soul, and our mind. Are you saved? Have you made the decision to love God with all of your heart, and to take up your cross and follow Him?
Knowing we are but dust in our physical makeup compels us to be busy for the Lord. “The night cometh, when no man can work.” We must be busy getting the gospel to our friends, neighbors, relatives, coworkers, and people whom God places in our life. We must love our family and say like Joshua, “As for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” We must redeem the time. We must buy up our opportunities. We have a compelling motivation.
When we are dust again, we have an appointment with God. For those who are saved, it will be at the Judgment Seat of Christ for the evaluation of things done in our body, whether good or bad. For those who are unsaved, they will stand at the Great White Throne Judgment and be sentenced forever into the Lake of Fire.
Life is a stewardship. What we do with Jesus determines what we do with our life. The time that we have in this life is short and fleeting. Remember that we go from dust to dust!
