Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion. ~Isaiah 52:8
One of the challenges of our society is that everyone reserves the right to their own opinion. They insert their opinion with statements such as, “If it were me, I would have done this differently.” They do not see the situation, outcome, or result as being satisfactory to them. As a result, we do not see things eye to eye. We are not on the same page. We are not in agreement. Isaiah speaks about a time in Israel when the nation and God would see “eye to eye.” It is important that we see eye to eye with God.
Israel is described as having sold themselves for nought (v. 3). The nation fell into terrible idolatrous practices. The Lord sent the Assyrians to oppress them as a means of chastening and to bring them back to Him (v. 5). The Assyrian invasion and oppression caused Israel to see how terribly they had fallen away into sin and defilement. Israel was not living in obedience to God’s commandments and just did not see things eye to eye with God. The consequence was that they were in bondage to their captors and sin. When we do not see eye to eye with God in our devotion to Him, we risk being in bondage to our sin.
However, God called on them to awaken and put on new beautiful garments (v. 1). In effect, God was calling the nation to repentance and to turn around. Revival occurs when there is an awakened concern about our sin. This is followed by an absolute confession of our sin to God. This is followed by an affirmative cleansing from our sin. Revival is coming to the awareness that we are not where we should be with God in our relationship, and we come to Him with a repentant heart and seek His restoration.
No longer did the watchmen see things from a different eye lens. The people being restored did not see things from a different perspective. They realized they had gotten away from God and needed to be on the same page with God. The people were gloriously reunited with the Lord in fellowship and spiritual health. When we see things eye to eye, we cease from a disobedient life. When we see things eye to eye, we put away our childish differences and strive together for the faith of the gospel. When we see things eye to eye, we seek the higher priority. The higher priority is to exalt the name of the Lord, to serve Him with all of our heart, to publish abroad His gospel message to the lost, and to dwell together in unity as brethren. Seeing eye to eye was critical for the bringing again of Zion. Seeing eye to eye keeps us from a bad testimony to the unsaved, and instead helps the lost to see a people with oneness in the Lord.
The Lord in His mercies brought again the nation. The people could rejoice that the differences were settled and God was being worshiped with hearts that were pure. God delivered them from a very harsh oppression, and they could rejoice that they were forgiven, that they were restored back in their city, and that the name of the Lord was being exalted.
Are you seeing eye to eye with God? Are your views and opinions compatible with His Word and priorities? Let us seek to see eye to eye with the Lord and with each other so that our joy may be full.
