Fit for a King

Today's Verse:

Then answered one of the servants, and said, Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the LORD is with him. ~1 Samuel 16:18

The phrase “fit for a king” has the idea that something is of such exceptional value that a king or someone of royalty would enjoy it very much. It refers to something valuable and of high worth. In our devotion this morning, we see David as a young lad who was an unknown person until a critical need arose in Saul’s court. Someone was needed to play a harp to soothe the agitated spirit of Saul. As a request for such a skilled person was made, one of Saul’s servants highly recommended young David for the job. David was a man who was fit for the king to help him. Let us see how David exemplifies the kind of man who is pleasing to God and best suited to represent him before other people. David is a man fit for the king.

We see David is skilled.

A skilled musician was needed to play the harp to comfort the troubled soul of Saul. One of Saul’s servants had been watching and studying David. He knew that David was the man who could fit the description hands-down. Let us determine to be expertly skilled in our duties and gifts. There is someone who is in need of what your talents can provide. If you are musically talented, use your gifts as a choir or orchestra participant. If you have a mechanical or engineering skill set, use it to help the church expand and be better at what it does. Be the best that you can be in your talents and skills, and do not let them go wasted.

We see David is soldierly.

Saul’s servant saw David as having great courage and ability as a soldier. He was referred to as a man of war, mighty, and valiant. There was a sense of patriotism about David. There was a sense of his ability to defend himself in combat. Soldiers are men who are willing to defend their country, fight for freedom, and not be a quitter. Christians are to be soldiers of grace. We must be willing to fight our spiritual enemy and not give up when there are setbacks. He needed a man who could endure hardness. Let us not be shy or back down from being durable soldiers for our Lord.

We see David is circumspect.

He was described as prudent in matters. He was experienced. He could make wise decisions. He knew when to speak and when to be quiet. When he spoke, he was someone worth listening to. He proved himself as a shepherd watching over his father’s flocks. Let us be careful to exercise good wisdom and judgment in all matters.

We see David is spiritual.

The most outstanding thing about him is that it was evident that the Lord was with him. Saul’s servant saw David meditating on God’s Word and spending time in prayer. We cannot have the Lord’s presence in our life apart from having a close spiritual walk with God. Being out in the hills of Bethlehem, David had a lot of time on his hands. He decided that he would spend his time getting God’s presence richly on his life.

David was decisively handpicked to serve Saul because everything about him said he was a servant fit for a king. Let us so live our life and conduct ourselves so that we depict we are fit for the King. Don’t waste your opportunities and privileges. May others see the difference in us as servants who are highly profitable.

Have a faithful God Morning!
