From Ruins to Riches

Today’s Verse:

And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou? And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself. ~Genesis 3:9-10

The USA has been the home for many “rags to riches” stories. Sam Walton was one of them. During the years of the Great Depression, Sam milked cows and sold newspapers to help support his family. After graduating college with a B.A. in Economics, he used $5,000 from the army and $20,000 he borrowed from his father to purchase a Ben Franklin variety store. He expanded from this start and founded Wal Mart and Sam’s Club, and became one of the wealthiest families in the USA. This morning, we see a true story that shows how each of us who are saved has gone from ruin to riches.

We see the covetous vision.

“And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.” Eve succumbed to the temptation to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. It began with a covetous eye that she had to “be as gods”. Be careful of the lust of the eyes and how it ensnares.

We see the carnal vice.

“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.” Eve ate of the forbidden fruit and led her husband to do the same. They immediately realized that they had sinned against the Lord. We are told the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew they were naked. Their act of disobedience exposed them and brought the curse of sin upon their souls and future generations to be born.

We see the Creator’s voice.

“And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” Adam and Eve went into hiding when they heard God’s voice. It was God’s voice calling for their fellowship. It was God’s voice calling because they had fallen. When we are not where we are supposed to be, God’s voice calls out for us. His voice calls through the Holy Spirit working through our conscience.

We see the condemning verdict.

“But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.” God declared them guilty of sin. The wages for their sin was death. Death is physical separation from loved ones, but when we die with our sins unforgiven, it is separation from the presence of God. The guilty verdict has been passed upon every sinner because of Adam’s sin.

We see the compassionate victory.

“In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins” (Colossians 1:14). God provided a satisfactory substitute to die for our sins. That substitute was our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus paid the sin debt in full through His shed blood and death on the cross. God proved His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. What love! What compassion! The moment we accept Jesus by faith as our Savior we have forgiveness of our sins and the gift of eternal life. We are recipient of the riches of God’s grace.

The greatest ruin to riches story is the salvation of every sinner who accepts the Lord Jesus as Savior and is born into God’s family. If you are not saved, you can be saved today by taking Jesus by faith as your Savior.
