God Is for Me

Writer's picture: Alan FongAlan Fong

Today's Verse:

When I cry unto thee, then shall mine enemies turn back: this I know; for God is for me. In God will I praise his word: in the LORD will I praise his word. ~Psalm 56:9-10

I remember as a kid in elementary school how the boys had kickball rivalries during recess. There would be 2nd and 3rd grade contentions about what side you would be on. The common phrase that you would hear would be, “I’m on their side.” We want to be on the winning side. However, when we are in serious trouble, almost everyone whom I know wants God on their side. David came to an important realization during a time of great trial. He came to the realization, “God is for me.”

We see an uncomfortable feeling.

David said, “Be merciful unto me, O God: for man would swallow me up; for he fighting daily oppresseth me. Mine enemies would daily swallow me up: for they be many that fight against me, O thou most High.” David was fighting with the Philistines. He was outnumbered; he was boxed in; he had nowhere to run and hide; he was fearful; he felt overwhelmed; he was in serious trouble. The idea of being swallowed up suggests that you are finished and gone. It has the connotation of no hope. David’s fears got the best of him. Like David, we all will face circumstances that give us an uncomfortable feeling: that feeling, like we have hit rock bottom. It is a feeling like we are barred in, tied up, and we will be slaughtered.

We see an uncompromising faith.

What do you do when the circumstances look really bad, your fears get the best of you, and your heart is overwhelmed? “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” David looked deep within his soul and looked up to Heaven. He placed his faith in God for the outcome of his situation. Yes, he was afraid, but he trusted in God to work things out. The greatest thing that we can do when things get tough is to trust in the Lord. How was he able to do this? He found hope and strength from the promises of God’s Word. In God will I praise His Word. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” Our best Bible reading and meditation comes when we are in trouble. We tend to give greater attention to detail and find exactly what we need to sustain us. If you are in a storm, have faith in God. If you are facing a trial of epic proportions, have faith in God. Don’t waver: just keep trusting the Lord.

We see an unconditional favor.

God is for me! What a wonderful fact that we must never let go of: God is for me. God is for me regardless of what the enemy says. God is for me no matter how serious the situation looks like. God is for me because God loves me. God is for me because God’s will is being done in my life. God is for me, and He will show that He is greater than my problem, bigger than my enemy, and wiser than earthly counselors. God is for me, and because of this, I am more than a conqueror through Him Who loves me. Knowing that God is for me gives me fresh insight. Knowing that God is for me helps me to see past my trouble. Knowing that God is for me gives me enablement in my weakness.

Don’t allow your problem to swallow you up. Don’t let your fears box you in a corner. What time you are afraid, trust in God. Permeate your heart and thoughts with the fact that God is for you.

Have a faith-inspired God Morning!
