Great is the Lord

Today’s Verse:

Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable. ~Psalm 145:3

Are you in awe of the greatness of God? Does His greatness make you consider how small and insignificant you are in comparison to Him? Does HIs greatness overwhelm you with a sense of worship and adoration? The psalmist makes a hearty declaration and backs it up with a multi-faceted description of why God is great.

There is the fact of God’s greatness.

God’s greatness is seen in all of His attributes. As our Creator, He is all-powerful. As our Heavenly Father, He is all-compassionate and kind. As our Savior, He is the Author of salvation in sending His only begotten Son to die for our sins. As the Most High God, He is incomparable because He is infinite and above all creation. As El Shaddai, He is the Lord God Almighty. He is everywhere and all-knowing. There is nothing that He does not know. There is nothing that He cannot do. He is the God of all hope, the God of all grace, the God of all peace, and the God Who never changes. He is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. He is greater than all of our problems, concerns, and fears. Great is the Lord!

There is the familiar of God’s greatness.

The psalmist experienced God’s greatness. Every day, he would look in awe to the majestic hills and the mountains, and he would exclaim God’s greatness. He experienced God’s answers to his prayers. He experienced God’s protection from his enemies. He experienced the mercies of God in his life. He saw how God took care of him down to his most little detail. When he was down and discouraged, he experienced the Lord lifting him up. He knew that in his most discouraging hour, God was there for him and with him. He heard the testimonies of other believers who also experienced the goodness of the Lord in their life. Great is the Lord!

There is the fear of God’s greatness.

In his times of meditation upon God’s Word and upon His Person, he realized that all of creation praised the Lord. There was a reverential awe that everything around him acknowledged the goodness of the Lord. It, in turn, prompted him to sing out, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised”! The Lord’s greatness should move us to fear. It should cause us to realize that we have nothing to be proud of and should be humble at all times. It should cause us to acknowledge that there is nothing we can do without the Lord. It should cause us to pray more and do more. It should cause us to major on the worship of God. It should cause us to remember that our days on earth are few and we must steward these days well.

Great is the Lord! Have you experienced His greatness in your life? Would you live your life in awe of His greatness and power? Take time today to realize that great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised!
