The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad. ~Psalm 126:3
One of my favorite hymns of worship is “To God be the Glory.” It starts off with the lyrics, “To God be the glory, great things He hath done.” The inspiration for the first stanza may have come from Psalm 126:3. Psalm 126 is a psalm that was written after the Babylonian captivity was over. The Jews had been in captivity for seventy years. Those who started the return back to Jerusalem could not believe it. They described it as: “We were like them that dream.” This morning, we want to reflect on the wonderfulness of the thought that the Lord hath done great things for us.
Let us be glad for the great things that God has done for us in salvation. He saved us and not we ourselves! Through salvation, we are forgiven of all our sins. Through salvation, we are adopted as sons of God. Through salvation, we have the gift of eternal life. Through salvation, we are accepted in the beloved and are God’s treasured possession. "The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad"!
Let us be glad for the sovereignty of God! By this, we know that God is in control of all things. There is nothing that He does not know about and there is nothing too hard for Him. "The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the LORD." “A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” God allows us to be in situations that are uncomfortable so that we learn to trust Him. He places us in situations where the answer is not immediate, but His presence is always near. He is always in control. "The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad"!
Our sojourn is the walk of faith. "We walk by faith, not by sight." Like Abraham, we are not quite sure what is next. However, God only needs to give us enough light for the next step. “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way." "I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye.” God unfolds His perfect will for us as we trust Him for each step and each stopping point in our life. "As for God, his way is perfect." Our sojourn is not a blind wandering from here to there. It is the Lord leading us one step at a time. "The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad"!
The goal of the Christian life is our conformity to the image of Christ. We are to be set apart in holiness. “For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.” God works the process of sanctification in our life. Our part in this is to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts and to live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world. He Who has begun a good work in us will continue to perform it until the day of Jesus Christ. All things, whether good or bad in our perception, work together for good to them that love God. "The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad"!
We have much to be thankful for! We should be possessed by a spirit of contentment as we think about how God works in and through us. Take time this morning to rejoice in everything that God is doing on your behalf. Truly, the Lord is doing great things for us!
