Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture, Behold, I lay in Sion a chief corner stone, elect, precious: and he that believeth on him shall not be confounded. Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, ~1 Peter 2:6-7
The word precious carries the idea of something that is very important and of inestimable worth to us. Many times, we associate this word with an heirloom, family jewelry, or possession that has been handed down for generations. We might ascribe it to a letter that was written to us by a loved one or someone we greatly respect. This morning, we want to reflect on how precious Jesus is to us.
Paul said in Ephesians 3:19, “And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.” The more we know Him, the more we realize how much He loves and cares for us. His love for us has no limitation. His love for us is inseparable. His love for us is protective. His love for us is sacrificial and giving. Through His love, He shed His blood for all of our sins. He loves us with an everlasting love. He loves us in spite of our faults. He loves us in spite of our failures and sin. His love gives us confidence and security. We love Him because He first loved us. His love is precious.
Jesus is our Savior, but Jesus is also our Lord. The name Lord implies ownership and rule. He is the only One worthy of our affection, devotion, and worship. As our Lord, we obey Him. As our Lord, we follow Him. As our Lord, we do those things pleasing in His sight. As our Lord, we bow to Him and Him alone. As our Lord, we recognize that it is our privilege to spend time in His presence. As our Lord, we desire to serve Him. As our Lord, we want to know and do His perfect will for our life. Jesus is precious because He is Lord!
Paul said, “And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again.” Jesus is our life! We live for Jesus, but we also live through Jesus. The hymn writer wrote: “Because He lives I can face tomorrow, Because He lives all fear is gone; Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives.” Jesus gives us the strength that we need to make it through life’s journey. Jesus takes our burdens and makes them His burdens. Jesus leads us all the way. Jesus is all the world to us! He is the pearl of great price that a man would pay all the money in the world for. He is the Lily of the Valley and the fairest of ten thousand to our soul. Jesus is precious because He is our life.
Jesus is so precious that we can’t fathom the thought of trading Him or giving Him up for anything else. "Unto you therefore which believe he is precious"! Our life is different because of Jesus. Our life is hopeless without Jesus. Take time today to let the Lord know that He is precious to you.
