He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. ~Psalm 91:1
Do you feel like you need a hideout from the pressures, problems, and worries of life? A hideout is a place where you seclude yourself away from distractions, phone calls, emails, social media contact, and constant interference. It is a place where you are alone and safe from fear and harm. The psalmist speaks about such a hideout that is real. He calls it the secret place of the Most High. Let us see this morning the blessing and help that a holy hideout can be for us.
“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” This is a great description of the Christian’s devotion time with God. It is a secret place where you and God meet for fellowship. It is the secret place of the Most High. It is where you see no one but God, and He has your undivided attention. It is described as a dwelling place, or an abiding place under the shadow of the Almighty. A Christian derives his strength, confidence, faith, and power from living under this shadow or in the presence of the Most High God. It is a time of adoration, asking, and abiding. It is where a Christian’s secret to power is derived.
Every Christian finds protection and safety by dwelling under the shadow of the Almighty. “Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.” A child of God who is faithful in his devotions is fortified against the attacks of Satan, the world, and the flesh. He is sheltered in safety and security regardless of how close the enemy might get. The believer not only has a covering from Satan’s attacks, but he is also bolstered in his confidence. Our secret to deliverance from the attacks of our enemies is found in our devotion time with God.
It is here where faith is developed and grown. It is here where the child of God commits his trust in all things to God. It is here where we learn to trust God when we are attacked, when we are anxious, and when we are afflicted. It is here where we commit all of our ways to God and have faith in Him for the outcome. Without these tests, we would not learn to trust in God. Dependency not only teaches us to trust, but it also teaches us how to wait on God. We are too impatient in our nature and would rather speed things up. However, God teaches us to wait for His perfect timing in all things.
“Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.” It is here where we learn to pray without ceasing and see answers to prayers. It is here in the secret place where we see God’s power at work on our behalf. It is here where we pray frequently, pray in faith, and pray fervently for God to work. It is here where God is working for us!
Our devotion time is our holy hideout. If you do not have a consistent devotion time, today is a great day to start. If you do have one, today is a great day to give it more structure and to make it a place where God can work without inhibition in your life.
