In the Service of the King

Today’s Verse:

And they said, The Lord hath need of him. And they brought him to Jesus: and they cast their garments upon the colt, and they set Jesus thereon. ~Luke 19:34-35

One of my favorite hymns is “I am Happy in the Service of the King.” It’s a privilege and joy to serve our Lord Jesus Christ. Our devotion this morning centers itself on a young colt (a juvenile donkey) that Jesus took into His service. Let us see the meaning behind “the Lord hath need of him.”

We see the search.

“Saying, Go ye into the village over against you; in the which at your entering ye shall find a colt tied, whereon yet never man sat: loose him, and bring him hither.” Jesus sends two of His disciples to a nearby village to locate a young donkey that He needed. Jesus is always on the search for people who will serve Him with all their hearts. This colt is the property of a certain owner and is tied. This world, the flesh, and Satan have each of us tied and captive to their ownership. These spiritual adversaries do not want to let us go from serving them. Jesus is looking for the one who will serve Him.

We see the selection.

First, it is a young, unbroken colt. God wants to use you when you are young. Samuel served the Lord at a very young age. A young, unbroken colt seems so illogical to use. Dr. Roy Thompson was a tough, unbroken young man when God called him to be a preacher. For over 40 years, God used this man to win thousands to Christ, build a great church, and see many called into the Lord’s service. Second, the men tell the owner, “The Lord hath need of him.” The Lord needs you in His work. The Lord needs you in His work now. The Lord needs you in an area of service that will give Him the glory.

We see the surrender.

When the owners are told, “The Lord hath need of him,” the donkey is let loose. God’s Word is sufficient for us as the reason why we should surrender to serve Him. Then, we are told that never man sat on this colt. Jesus will be the first One to sit on this colt. Jesus wants to be first in your life. Jesus wants to sit on the throne of your life. Contrary to his nature, the young colt does not resist Jesus! Jesus literally sits in the driver’s seat. Surrender is not just giving the keys of your life to the Lord, but letting Him sit where He is in complete control.

We see the service.

The young colt carries Jesus on his back into town. The disciples and the townspeople see Jesus riding on this colt as a King riding triumphantly among His subjects and receiving their adoration and praise. This young colt has the privilege of lifting Jesus high and taking Him where He will be honored and glorified by everyone who sees Him. The privilege of serving the Lord is so that we can lift Him high so that others will see Him and exalt Him.

Just like this young colt, the Lord has need of you. Loosen whatever has you tied up and come to the Lord. Let Him sit on the throne of your heart and life without reservation or competition. In your service, make sure Jesus gets the glory.
