Less Than Nothing

Today’s Verse:

All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing, and vanity. ~Isaiah 40:17

A nation is a country of people identified by their constitution, sovereignty, ethnicity, economics, and purpose. There are currently 195 countries, or nations, in the world. A nation ranks itself based on its monetary, military, technological, and trade power. Nations that band together see themselves as a united confederacy for power. A powerful nation tends to believe and trust in its strength and sees God as an interference to its quest. In our devotion this morning, we see the power of the nations compared to the power of God. God said of all nations that they are less than nothing.

We see the nations and their spite.

“Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed....” Today, we see nations that are hostile to God due to their unbelief or their belief in false gods. The nations that do not know God are angry and rage against God, His holy Word, and His people. They are filled with spite towards God and shake their puny fists at God. During the Great Tribulation, many nations of the world will fit the description of taking counsel together against God and our Lord Jesus Christ.

We see the nations and their significance.

In Isaiah 40, God describes the nations of the world as "a drop of a bucket,” “a very little thing,” and “less than nothing.” God describes the nations as very tiny, then He goes on further by saying that they are less than nothing! Can you imagine being less than nothing? That’s like saying, “You don’t exist.” As we look back in history, many “world powers" who thought they were great eventually were brought to the place where they were less than nothing. Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, Greece, Rome, and world powers overthrown in world wars of the past were made as nothing. They had to rely on other nations to make them loans and assist them in redeveloping their countries. Over and over, God has shown nations to be less than nothing.

We see the nations and their Sovereign.

“To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?" "Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth.” God is Creator. God is Controller. God is Conqueror. Compared to God, the nations must see that they are just a little thing. Money? God said, “The silver is mine, and the gold is mine.” Military? The Lord is the Lord of Hosts and is Captain of the armies of Heaven. God is strong in power, all-knowing, everywhere always, and eternal. No, every nation is less than nothing compared to God.

We see the nations and their submission.

“Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.” All nations must humble themselves and confess that Jesus is Lord to the glory of God. If they do not submit voluntarily, they will involuntarily. "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD"! Let the nations call on the Lord in submission or else they shall be turned unto Hell. When we think of who we were before God, we were less than nothing!

Have a humbled God Morning!
