And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night. ~Exodus 14:20
Are you afraid of darkness? I remember growing up and being fearful of being in a room or location that was completely darkened. I was not particularly fond of going into caves, darkrooms, or settings that were pitch black. However, whenever I am in a location or place that is darkened, I am always thankful and relieved when the light is back on. When the light is on, you can see clearly again and do not feel vulnerable of being preyed upon. Our devotion this morning speaks to us about a pillar of the cloud that gave light at night for the children of Israel. Let us consider this morning the command of God, “Let there be light.”
The pillar of cloud was a symbol of the presence of God. Though this pillar of cloud was light to the Israelites, it was darkness and night to the Egyptians. The Egyptians are a picture of the unsaved man. The unsaved dwell in darkness. Men love darkness rather than light. The unsaved must come to the light in order to be saved. However, their sinful hearts would rather dwell in darkness. The Egyptians were restricted from coming near the Israelites. They were stuck in darkness due to their own choice of not have a saving faith in the Lord. Are you someone who has chosen to live in darkness when God would rather that you are in the light?
The pillar of cloud was a light at night to the Israelites. It gave light by night to these. God made a way for the Israelites. God makes a way for you and me as well. His Word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. The path of the just is as the shining light that shineth more and more unto the perfect day. God gives us enough light for our next step. With the light that God gives us, we can see more than others. We can see farther than others. We can see what others cannot see. We are privileged.
First, we are to walk in the light as He is in the light. Second, we are to shine as lights in this dark world. God gives us the privilege of His light so that we can shine it in the lives of those who are in darkness. How brightly is your light shining? Where is your light shining? How often is your light shining? Don’t hide your light under a bushel or under a bed where men cannot see. Don’t allow your life to prefer darkness over light!
This pillar of cloud was light to the Israelites and darkness to the Egyptians. The one could not come to the other. The pillar of cloud became a barrier and roadblock to the Egyptians. The Egyptians could not come near to the Israelites. What a blessing to know that God has His way of keeping the enemies of the faith from getting close enough to us lest our faith is discouraged.
God gives us light by night. “Let there be light”! Let there be light in your times of success. Let there be light during your times of battle and discouragement. Let there be light in your daily life among the people whom God has placed you with. Don’t allow the light of the Lord to be shut out of your life. Let there be light at all times.
