Looking for that City

Today’s Verse:

For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God. ~Hebrews 11:10

A little girl was taking an evening walk with her father. Wonderingly, she looked up at the stars and exclaimed, "Oh, Daddy, if the wrong side of Heaven is so beautiful, what must the right side be!" (From “Home Fires” by Charles Allen). How much do you know about Heaven? Can you describe the grandeur, glory, and greatness of Heaven? More importantly, are you looking for Heaven? Are you looking forward to spending eternity in Heaven with our Lord?

Heaven has a Producer.

“Whose builder and maker is God.” God is the Chief Architect and General Contractor of Heaven. It is the throne and temple of our God. Today, it is known as the third Heaven, or paradise. In eternity, it is called the New Jerusalem. Heaven is made according to God’s specifications. There is no shortage of space in Heaven. There is no sin in Heaven. There is no sadness, sorrow, or tears in Heaven. It is the city of the living God.

Heaven is a place.

It is a city and is named New Jerusalem. It is the city of God. Jesus called it His Father’s house with many mansions. He said, “I go to prepare a place for you.” Paul called it paradise. The idea of paradise is beauty, peacefulness, and a place you don’t want to leave. It a large place. It is cubic in dimensions, spanning 1,500 miles in its length, width, and breadth. It is a lighted place. Jesus is the light of Heaven. There is no need for the sun, moon, or stars to provide light. It is luxurious with massive, jeweled walls, gates, and foundations, and streets made of gold. It is a place that is breathtaking, unimaginable, and beyond description.

Heaven is permanent.

“A city which hath foundations.” It’s a city that is unshakable. It’s a place of stability. It is a city which will never be conquered. It is a place that is eternal and unending. Abraham had a vision of this city. As a sojourner, he dwelt in tents. He did not have a permanent place that he called home. However, in Heaven, it is a place every believer will call home. It will never grow old, become outdated, become run down, or fade in its beauty. In its luster, it shines forever and forever.

Heaven is populated.

In Hebrews 12:22-24, all the inhabitants of Heaven are referred to. Jesus is there! God is there! Old Testament believers are there! All those who received Jesus Christ as Saviour, whose names are in the Lamb’s book of life, are there! The angels of God are there! The blood of Christ which speaketh better things than that of Abel is there. Heaven is the home of all the redeemed. It is a well-populated city.

Heaven is our passion.

He looked for a city....” He kept journeying with the city as his focus. Christian friend, make looking for Heaven your goal. Don’t be so earthly-minded that Heaven is not on your mind. Paul said to lay hold on eternal life. It is our inheritance incorruptible, undefiled, and that fadeth not away. Make sure the passion of your heart is Jesus and Heaven.

Have a heavenly God Morning!
