Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered. ~Psalm 40:5
Do you have a heart that is overflowing with praise and thankfulness to God? Do you have a praise list that is as long as your prayer list? Are you careful to inventory all of the good things that God does for you? The psalmist made a powerful statement concerning the goodness of God. He said that all of the things that God has done for him are many and more than can be numbered.
The attitude of the psalmist was one of complete praise and thankfulness. He was thanking the Lord for the gift and benefits of salvation. He thought of his terrible past and how the Lord took him out of a place of hopelessness to a place of security and stability. If we are not careful, our attitude can be shaped by our surroundings and a spirit of entitlement. We can selfishly arrive at the place where we think that we deserve a lot more. We must strive to have an attitude that says, "God is better to us than we deserve."
He said, “Many... are thy wonderful works... they are more than can be numbered.” He was meditating upon everything that God had done for him. He was overwhelmed at the smallest detail that God was concerned about for him. He came to the conclusion that God does more for him than he will ever do for God. We can never out-give the Lord. He realized that the thoughts of God toward him cannot be reckoned in order. Are you at the place in life where you realize that God is more concerned about you than you are concerned about yourself? Can you inventory everything that God has and is doing for you?
“Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works....” He was appreciative of being saved, of being a recipient of God’s grace, and of the complete security that he had in the Lord. He was thankful! He was thankful for the trials that he was going through. He was thankful for how God was working every day in his life. He was saying, “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good!”
Today would be a good time for each of us to assess all of the goodness of God in our life. We need to realize that many are God’s wonderful works for us. He was thankful that God gave him purpose, a pathway, a power, and a priority. His life was never more complete than when he by faith received the Lord as his Savior. Going forward, he gave careful attention to thank the Lord for His goodness in his life. Just as God gives attention to the smallest details of our life, we should give attention to everything that God is doing in our life.
Can you say, “Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done”? Why not take time today to count your blessings and name them one by one?
