I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star. ~Revelation 22:16
Do you ever gaze at the stars? There is something beautiful and captivating about looking at the stars in the galaxy on an unclouded night. On a very clear night, you are able to see the constellations and star patterns. Our attention this morning is on one specific star. It is referred to as the morning star. Of the many names describing the attributes and Person of our Lord Jesus Christ, He refers to Himself as the bright and morning star.
The morning star is really not a star, but the planet Venus as it appears before sunrise. It is the brightest star a person will see in the early morning hour way before sunrise. It is a bright illuminating star that is predictable. Astronomers for years have depended on the morning star for illumination and navigational assistance. As the morning star, Jesus shines brightly so that all eyes can see Him. As a brightly shining star, the Lord Jesus Christ should command our attention and devotion. He is the Light of the world. He is the light of the glorious gospel which shines brightly to draw men away from the blinding light of Satanic deception. The morning star is clearly the brightest star in the sky. Is the brightness of His illumination clearly distinguished in your life today?
This star was essential for direction and navigation. The wise men of Persia asked, “Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.” The star guided them on their long journey to Bethlehem. “When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.” The star led them to the child Jesus! Seek the Lord while He may be found: call upon Him while He is near. Are you letting Jesus guide you in your walk of faith? Do you have faith in the Lord’s leading in your life?
“I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth” (Numbers 24:17). Balaam gave a prophecy regarding the star of Jacob. It gave reference to the arrival of the Lord Jesus Christ Who would come as the King of the Jews and the Savior of the entire world. We still preach about this star! We are still witnessing about this star! The morning star arises new every morning. Jesus Christ arises anew and fresh in the lives of those who place their trust in Him as Savior.
The decision we must make is will we allow Him to be the sole star in our life? Will we allow Him to shine in our hearts through His Word? Will we allow Him to be the star that shines brightest in our life? Will we unashamedly let other people know that there is only one star that we look to for our direction? The wise men by faith followed this star and they were delighted when it brought them to the where the young child was. It gave confidence. It gave comfort. It leads to conversion for those who place their faith in Him as Savior.
This morning, let us gaze at the morning star. It arises anew every morning. You can trust this star to always be there for you. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, and look full into His wonderful face.
