For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. ~2 Peter 1:8-9
If you are like me, I am thankful for my vision and ability to see. I need to wear corrective eyeglasses for me to see clearly. When I was between ages 6 and 7, I was diagnosed with myopia or nearsightedness. This vision impairment is where you have to look at something very close in order to clearly see and visualize it. Without my glasses, I cannot see afar off. This morning, we are looking at spiritual myopia and what to do about it.
How do you detect if you have myopia? Well, first there is a diminishing of your ability to see the spiritual things of God clearly. You have an inability to see things by faith. You have an inability to see the importance of the spiritual disciplines. Worst, you fail to see things as God does. Second, there is a noticeable deficiency in your spiritual productivity. You are noticeably barren and unfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. There is a deficiency of the fruit of the Spirit, of souls being saved, and answers to prayer. Third, there is a distraction in our thinking to where we have forgotten why God saved us. It is important that we diagnose quickly the signs of spiritual myopia.
We put ourselves at risk to accidents. We are a risk to other Christians. We are like walking trees that have nothing to offer. We will experience increased conflicts with other people. We become stunted in our spiritual growth and in our status. We will tend to worry and fret more. We will lack discernment at critical junctions in our lives. When trials come, we tend to fear and look for secular answers before we seek the Lord for His help. In short, we are walking in the flesh and not by faith. Spiritual myopia is not to be taken lightly. It makes us blinded to the blessings of God. It impairs a clear vision for our Christian life and future.
How do we deal with spiritual myopia? Is it possible to correct our vision to 20/20? Yes! First, we must be committed to a programmed path for our Christian growth. We must add to our faith virtue; to virtue knowledge; to knowledge temperance; to temperance patience; to patience godliness; to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. Second, we must give all diligence in building these godly virtues in our lives. Third, we must apply great discipline to developing these godly virtues. It takes effort, much Scripture reading, much prayer, and much practice. Fourth, we must expect to be tested in these areas in order to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord. Last, we must be under the control of the Holy Spirit in order to succeed.
Yes, we can overcome and prevent spiritual myopia. When we do, we can clearly see the path that God has laid out for us. We will clearly see God’s vision for us. Don’t be a victim of spiritual myopia.
