Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD. ~Psalm 134:1
Some of us are early morning people, and others are night-time people. We thrive best at one of these two times. Those who can stay up late at night and get things done are nicknamed “night owls.” Owls are nocturnal creatures that do their main hunting activity at night. Psalm 134-135 is an encouragement to the servants of the Lord whose duties were to stand in the house of the Lord at night. For most people, night time is when we wind down and sleep. However, there were servants of the Lord who by night stood in the house of the Lord. Our devotion this morning is an encouragement for all of us about serving the Lord when others are unaware of what we are doing.
We are to serve the Lord always. Service is an expression of our worship to the Lord. It is the means by which we demonstrate our love and affection to God. "Whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him." Our God is eternal, infinite, and not bound by time. We must remember that as servants of God, we are to “lay hold on eternal life.” We are to be instant in season and out of season. We are on call 24/7 in serving the Lord. Be ready and willing to serve the Lord at all times.
Servants are the property of their master and owner. As such, names and titles are insignificant. The Gospel of Mark represents our Lord Jesus as a servant. There is no mention of His Hebrew or human genealogy in Mark because servants have no need of being tracked by their genealogy. We do not know these servants of the Lord who stood in the house of the Lord by night, but the fact is they did what they were supposed to do. I am thankful for God’s servants who serve the Lord anonymously and unknown to others.
Those servants who by night stood in the house of the Lord included those priests who kept the lights burning at night in the tabernacle of God. Servants of God who pray through the night are sacrificing sleep and good health, but make the greatest contribution by lifting up holy hands to the Lord for their loved ones and fellow servants of God. Night time is when there is little to no distractions. Night time is when God sees we are serious about having His hand of blessing and special intervention on our behalf.
"Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the LORD." Our worship must exalt the Lord in private as well as in public. As we lift our hands up to God, we inspire those around us to likewise exalt the Lord. Let us be detailed in our worship. Let us be devoted in our worship. Let us be diligent in our worship.
Night owls are alert and vigilant. They do not allow other voices to distract them. They make the most of their time. They are productive when others are asleep. Don’t let the night deter you from giving God your best. Stand tall, stand faithful, and stand alert!
