No Comparison

Today's Verse:

Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders? ~Exodus 15:11

We live in a very consumer-driven society that wants to get the most for the money that is spent on goods and services. As value consumers, we compare products and services to be sure that we are getting the best and most for our money. When we obtain something that is of such excellent value, we describe it as something where there is no comparison. In our passage for this morning, Moses speaks wonderfully about God by asking, “Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods?” Moses said, “There is no comparison!”

We see a miraculous crossing.

The event that was the reason for the song of Moses was the Red Sea crossing. This event is one of the great miracles of the Bible. The Israelites had been set free by Pharaoh and the Egyptians. However, the Egyptians changed their minds and decided they wanted to take back the Israelites as slaves. Here was Israel at the shoreline of the Red Sea and the Egyptian army behind them. They were literally shut in. The crossing of the red Sea was humanly impossible. God intervened and with a pillar of cloud protecting the backside of the Israelites, and He sent a strong east wind that blew into the midst of the Red Sea. The wind separated the waters into two walls and the ground in the midst became dry. The Israelites crossed over dry shod, and not one soul was lost. As soon as the last person crossed over, God lifted the cloud and the Egyptian army tried to pursue after the Hebrews. God let the water return to its previous state, and as it did so, it crashed upon the Egyptian army and drowned the soldiers and horses. As the Hebrews watched from the other side, they marveled at this incredible miracle. When a person gets saved they have experienced a miraculous crossing. They have passed from death to life; from darkness to light; from being a child of Satan to becoming a child of God; from spending eternity in Hell to eternity in Heaven. What a miraculous crossing!

We see a matchless commentary.

Moses said there is no comparison to God. This was a monumental statement considering how Israel had come out of a land overrun with idolatrous worship. Moses cites three obvious and overwhelming attributes about God. The first is God is glorious in holiness. The attribute of holiness leads us to worship God. We are called to worship God in the beauty of holiness. Our voices should exclaim, “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God almighty.” The second is God is fearful in praises. This means He is to be revered through our individual and congregational praises. I believe we best express this through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs when we sing and make melody to the Lord. The great hymns of the faith should move us to service and extended seasons of worship. Then he said, “Doing wonders.” Though those two words sound very simple, it is a powerful way of saying only God can do great things. God does the impossible. God changes the unchangeable. God is incomparable. God is matchless. God can do anything but fail! What a matchless commentary.

We see a mighty chorus.

Moses and all of Israel were singing together and exalting the Lord. They were one mighty choir exclaiming the glory of God’s holiness, power, and Person. This is the first Hallelujah chorus! The entire congregation was involved in song and letting God know how much He was adored, loved, and worthy of praise. Dr. Ed Nelson told me many years ago, “Let your theology dictate your music and not your music dictate your theology.” This is what Moses and Israel were doing on this incredible day. What a mighty chorus!

There is no comparison to God! Take a moment now to consider the mighty crossings in your life. Consider the matchless commentary of Moses. Worship the Lord with new enthusiasm and joy through sacred song.

Have a glorious God Morning!
