And the Spirit bade me go with them, nothing doubting. ~Acts 11:12a
Do you ever come to the place where you earnestly desire to know the right decision to make? Do you find yourself at a place where you are in turmoil because you are looking at options instead of being obedient? Peter experienced that type of moment after having been a seasoned preacher of the gospel for over 10 years. This morning, let us see how God leads us in making the right faith decisions.
Peter had been staying at the home of Simon the Tanner in Joppa. At midday while praying, God gave Peter a vision unlike anything he had ever seen before. This vision was very real and compelling. God showed him a vessel that descended from Heaven filled with four-footed beasts. God told him to rise up, kill, and eat. Peter was taken aback by this request. He was being told to eat what was considered unclean meat. God told him not to call unclean what God called clean. God commanded Peter to put away his prejudices and reservations and to take the gospel to the Gentiles. He was told to do the unprecedented. To the Jews, what he was being told to do was unheard of. However, this vision was a fresh calling of God to get out of his comfort zone and allow God to use him in advancing the gospel in a way undreamed of. Be always watchful for a fresh vision that God will give you during extended seasons of prayer.
In order to deal with Peter’s reservations and to give complete affirmation concerning this calling, God gave this vision to him three times. Each time, the vision was the same, and the calling was the same. God knows our weaknesses, fears, and tendencies. We must be very careful to heed the repeated times God gives us the same message or answer. It might be the same Scripture or principle is repeated by different people within a reasonable period of time. It might be different preachers preaching from the same Scripture. It could be in your devotions that the Lord speaks to you about something you are praying about and then later that day, it is affirmed again through an unrelated event. Be careful not to doubt a repeated message from the Lord.
It was the Holy Spirit who spoke to him. It was a very clear distinct leading of the Spirit. Peter was filled with apprehension and had many questions. However, he knew it was the Holy Spirit Who said, "Go." The Holy Spirit took away his fears and calmed his heart. The Spirit made the vision crystal clear and understandable. He was to go and go immediately. It was clear that every step of the way was laid out by the Lord. Never argue or debate with the Holy Spirit. Follow His voice and leading.
He was told, “Go, nothing doubting.” He was told to trust in the Lord completely. He was told to release his fears and anxiety. He was reminded to not let the opinions of men sway what he was being told to do. Have faith in God’s Word. Have faith in God’s leading. Have faith in God’s command. Never undo in fear what God tells you to do in faith.
Peter’s obedience opened the door of the gospel to the Gentiles. It led to many new doors being opened for the gospel and an explosive expansion of the gospel into the uttermost parts of the world. All of this happened because the Spirit bade him go, nothing doubting.
What is the Spirit telling you to do in faith? Have faith in His command, and go!
