Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. ~Proverbs 19:2
The soul is the life of every man. The real you is your soul. Your soul is eternal. The most important aspect of every man is his soul. No wonder Jesus said, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” The Apostle Paul told the believers at Thessalonica, “And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” All of us must give attention to our soul life.
"Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good... An idle soul shall suffer hunger." Soul neglect is a costly matter. It can lead to fleshly decisions that are unprofitable to us. It can lead to impulsive actions and sin. In the same verse Solomon said, “And he that hasteth with his feet sinneth.” It can lead to the faulty thought process that the end justifies the means. The neglect of the soul leads to a famished spiritual life and an unavailing prayer life. It is like a vine that is barren of grapes. It is a life unprepared for the trials and storms of life that come our way. Be careful with your soul.
We must discipline our lives so that the need of the soul is our highest priority. A daily schedule for reading and meditating on God’s Word is like having a scheduled meal to nourish the body. Taking time to pray takes our soul life to mountain heights unattainable any other way. Jesus took Peter, James, and John to a mountain to pray. This was for the benefit of their soul life. We must allocate time to be under the preaching of God’s Word so that we are inspired to do something for God. We must actively witness and try to win the unsaved to Christ. This in itself lights a fire within us and stirs us for the advancement of God’s kingdom. Be a good steward of your soul.
“He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die.” We must give attention to obeying God and His Word. Obedience and faith go hand-in-hand. Disobedience results in a breach of our fellowship with God. We deny ourselves the blessings of God when we live in sin. The devil works havoc in a life that is disobedient. A healthy soul life delights to do the will of God and does what God asks of him. Notice, “he that despiseth his ways shall die.” “The wages of sin is death.” Disobedience has a terminal consequence.
“Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul” (1 Peter 2:11). We are in a constant daily battle with the flesh. Peter speaks of the fleshly lusts which war against the soul. When our guard is down and the flesh wins over, we become spiritual pygmies with little faith, little power, little prayer, little grace, and little fruit. Watch out for the spiritual IEDs on the roadside! Watch out for the sniper attacks! “The highway of the upright is to depart from evil: he that keepeth his way preserveth his soul” (Proverbs 16:17). Give heed this morning to the needs of your soul. Take in bountifully that you might give out bountifully. Be steadfast with your soul!
