But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. ~Psalm 52:8
There are many agricultural products we consume that we take for granted. One of these is the olive tree and its fruit, the olive. Olive trees are one of the oldest trees that are still abundant in availability and a major food resource. The olive fruit is eaten as it is as a fruit, or as a garnish with other dishes. Olive oil is considered a very excellent resource for healthy cooking and eating. Olives and the olive tree are an integral part of our economy. In Psalm 52, David uses the metaphor of the olive tree to describe his faith and life. He does this in contrast to the evil and wicked devices of a man named Doeg the Edomite. Let us see the importance of having an olive tree faith.
The first mention of anything to do with the olive tree is when a dove was sent out by Noah while he was in the ark, and it returned with an olive leaf in its mouth. The olive branch has always been a symbol of peace and accord. Doeg is a symbol of unrest and discord. David recognized that the source of perfect peace is when we are rooted firmly in our relationship with the Lord. The first peace that every person must attain is peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. From then on, we can attain the peace of God when we rest all of our fears, troubles, and anxieties upon Him. Are you at peace when you are in the house of God?
Olive oil is derived from the olive tree. This oil is an essential for cooking, heating, and lighting. In Zechariah 4, we see the picture of a large, golden candlestick that is kept lit by two olive trees connected on opposite sides to it. The olive branches empty its precious oil into the two golden pipes to provide a perpetual source of fuel for the lighting of the candlestick. The two olive branches represent two of God’s faithful servants during the Tribulation period. As servants of the living God, we must have the anointing of God upon our service and message. The anointing of oil is always symbolic of the power of the Holy Spirit. As an olive tree in the house of God, we should seek to derive our power from God every time we are at church. Are you seeking God’s power when you are at church?
The sight of an olive tree grove speaks of abundance and prosperity. Being situated in the house of God enabled him to always abound in the work of the Lord. There is abundance when souls are being saved, baptized, and added to the church. There is abundance when spiritual leaders are being reproduced and serving the Lord. There is abundance when God’s people excitedly volunteer to serve the Lord and advance His work. More olive trees are never a problem. More people getting saved, more people serving the Lord, and more work being done for the glory of God are never a problem. Are you always abounding in the work of the Lord?
Healthy olive trees are firmly and deeply rooted. They have what I refer to as a habitual adherence. The deeper the root, the more there is fruit. Doeg is a picture of an unstable and double-minded soul. Like a green olive tree, David is firmly rooted in the right location. When we are firmly rooted in God’s house, we have the perfect weather climate, the perfect soil, the perfect irrigation, and the perfect results. David testified of a faith that was strengthened and abounded as he trusted in the mercies of God for ever and ever.
What a powerful thought for today! Let us determine to be a green olive tree in the house of God. The house of God is the place where God wants to do a great work in every heart that is firmly rooted in Him.
