My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: ~1 John 2:1
When someone is being bullied, the person is relieved to know that someone is there to help them. When someone is in legal trouble, the person is relieved to find a great lawyer to represent them. It’s always a good thing to know that someone strong, reliable, and able is in your corner. This morning, we want to see how the Lord Jesus Christ is there for us as our Advocate.
An advocate is someone who stands up for your rights. Most commonly, we refer to an advocate as an intermediary, an intercessor, or a competent representative on our behalf. In most situations, we think of a lawyer when we speak of an advocate. An advocate stands in our place. An advocate pleads our cause. An advocate seeks to prevail on our behalf. The Lord Jesus Christ is our Advocate as we walk this faith journey and deal with our enemies: the flesh, the world, and Satan.
What a comfort to know that He is Jesus Christ the righteous. This speaks of His perfection. This speaks of His credentials. This speaks of His competency. This speaks of His ability. This speaks of His availability. He has met all of the righteous demands of God the Father as being sinless, holy, and separate from sinners. He is Jesus Christ Who is God! He is Jesus Christ Who is Lord! He is Jesus Christ the Captain of our salvation. He is Jesus Christ the Lamb of God Who takes away the sin of the world. He is the only One of His kind. He is the only One Who is righteous in Person.
The advocate represents us when we are in trouble! As Christians, we constantly deal with our sin nature. When sin seems to overpower us, we feel discouraged. We feel like God does not care for us. However, Jesus represents us to our heavenly Father as our Advocate. He is the propitiation for our sins. He reminds us that He is in our corner. As our Advocate, Jesus is powerful. His shed blood keeps cleansing us from sin. We find our security in His love for us. He has a perfect win-loss record on our behalf. Yes, He is in our corner.
As our Advocate, He is there for us always and all the time. He is there on a legal retainer, which He paid for through His shed blood. He is there 24/7. He stands with us, for us, and in favor of us. He is there every time we fail. He is there every time temptation comes our way. He is an Advocate Who will never go out of business.
Don’t let sin discourage you from living for God. We have an Advocate in the Lord Jesus Who is always in our corner.
