I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end. ~Psalm 119:112
Would the people in your life describe you as someone who is devoted? Devotion describes the allegiance, attachment, and adherence that one has to a person, purpose, or principle. Devotion is a way of describing who or what has your heart. Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”
“I have inclined mine heart to perform thy statutes alway, even unto the end.” An undivided heart seeks to please the one whom it is devoted to. The psalmist was devoted to a complete obedience to God’s Word. He said he would perform the statutes of the Lord, even unto the end. Nothing would deter or hinder him from being obedient to God’s commandments. He firmly decided that sickness, suffering, struggles, or Satan would not keep him from obeying God’s Word. Obedience must become a discipline by which we keep and obey God’s commandments regardless of our circumstances. A devoted inclination is to be vitally addicted to God’s Word.
“I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love... Depart from me, ye evildoers: for I will keep the commandments of my God.” An undivided heart works at keeping away distractions and interferences that could steal away our devotion. First, we must be careful of what we allow ourselves to see and hear. What we see and hear become thoughts. Thoughts that are not disciplined or restrained are thoughts that can weaken our devotion. This is why the meditation of God’s Word is so necessary for a victorious Christian life. Second, we must boldly separate ourselves from the fellowship of carnal believers, scornful critics, sinful associations, and godless behavior. Who we allow to influence us does affect us, for good or for bad.
“Thou art my hiding place and my shield: I hope in thy word... Uphold me according unto thy word, that I may live: and let me not be ashamed of my hope. Hold thou me up, and I shall be safe: and I will have respect unto thy statutes continually.” An undivided heart finds safety in its devotion to God’s Word. The power of God’s Word deflects the harsh words and criticisms of the enemy. It finds shelter and refuge from the fiery darts of the wicked one. Then, there is the sustaining of a heart that is devoted to God’s Word. A passionate devotion finds strength to move forward no matter how tough things get.
“Thou hast trodden down all them that err from thy statutes: for their deceit is falsehood. Thou puttest away all the wicked of the earth like dross: therefore I love thy testimonies.” Perfect love casteth out all fear. Thus, a passionate devotion for God’s Word knows that God is greater than our enemies. The enemies of our faith cannot overcome the truth of God’s Word.
We are exhorted to be passionately devoted to God’s Word for our pathway, our protection, and our passion. Obey God’s Word. Love God’s Word. Stay upon God’s Word!
