Samuel’s Key to Success
Today’s Verse:
And Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him, and did let none of his words fall to the ground. ~1 Samuel 3:19
Most people desire to be successful. For some people, success is having a lot of money and wealth. For others, success is fame and popularity. For others, success is having just enough to meet their needs. Biblically, success is determined by the hand of God upon our life. Without the Lord, we can do nothing. Without the Lord, we have no hope. Without the Lord, our best-laid plans are futile. Samuel was a man who had the evidence of God’s hand on his life. Let us see, this morning, the key to Samuel’s success.
We see his miraculous conception.
The birth of Samuel was one of the miracle births of the Bible. His birth was an answer to prayer for his mother. Hannah prayed that she would be able to give birth to a son who would serve God all the days of his life. She desired a son who would be given back to the Lord and honor Him through his life. God heard her prayer and blessed her womb so that she could conceive. Samuel’s name means “asked of God.” From the moment of his birth, his life had purpose and direction. You were born for a purpose. That purpose is to glorify and please the Lord. Regardless of where you are in life, it is important that you elevate your life purpose to give honor to God.
We see his meticulous cultivation.
“Samuel... did let none of his words fall to the ground.” From the moment of his birth through the transfer to the high priest Eli, Samuel was thoroughly cultivated in God’s Word. His entire life centered itself on receiving and obeying the Word of the Lord. He was saturated in God’s Word. He was a student of God’s Word. He was a spokesman for God’s Word. He was a steward of God’s Word. Over time, Samuel was the prophet of God who had the message of God for the people. He did let none of his words fall to the ground. He had the utmost respect for God’s Word! Being cultivated in God’s Word is like Jeremiah, who said, “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” Being cultivated in God’s Word is meditating upon it day and night and, thus, finding good success.
We see his marvelous connection.
“The LORD was with him.” He had God’s hand and power on his life. He was recognized as the prophet in Israel. He had God’s favor upon his life. This is the difference maker. This is the absolute must in ministry. There is no success apart from the Lord being with us. The absence of God is the absence of power. The absence of God is the absence of His blessing. Whatever occurred in Samuel’s life could point back to one thing: the Lord was with him. People want to follow a man whom the Lord is with. In Zechariah, he speaks of a future statement of the Gentile nations to the Jews: “We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you.”
True success is possible when our purpose is to glorify God, our priority is God’s Word, and our prosperity is tied to God’s presence. True success is not found anywhere except when the Lord’s hand is upon us. Let us consider the model that Samuel has left for us and be sure that we are in alignment with God’s requirements for success.
