For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. ~Psalm 119:89
Psalm 119 is the “Word of God” psalm. Every verse refers to God’s Word as precepts, commands, statutes, law, and testimonies. It is God’s unchangeable revelation for every life. The psalmist learned that God’s Word can be trusted in all of life’s situations. He makes a powerful declaration in Psalm 119:89 when he says, “For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven.”
His Word is settled in Heaven. “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” The words and books of men will be forgotten or buried. God’s Word is forever! It cannot be destroyed or eradicated. It is timeless. It is perpetually relevant. Culture, technology, and innovation cannot and will not change God’s Word. It is reliable and faithful. “Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth.” It is the open revelation of God’s heart to men. It is forever settled in Heaven.
“For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” It is powerful! It will convict the hardest and vilest sinner. It can transform lives. It can turn a wicked man into a holy man. It can transform heathen men into holy men. It pierces our hearts and shows us our sin. It breaks our conscience and brings us into right fellowship with God. It comforts and soothes us during our seasons of affliction. It revives us when we are waning. "I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me."
“And David said, There is none like that; give it me.” God’s Word must have preeminence in our lives. It is the first Word and last Word for all our counsel. It is the Word of wisdom and excellence for our every step. “Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.” We should dare not to proceed into anything without a word of counsel from the Lord. Paul said, “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom.” Make God’s Word preeminent in your life.
“Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” God’s Word is food for our soul. It is manna from Heaven which we must gather every day. We must ingest God’s Word for our soul as man ingests food for his body. A well-fed soul is a healthy soul. A well-fed soul is a sturdy soul. A well-fed soul is a soul whereby out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. We must take advantage of daily reading, memorization, study, meditation, and preaching in order to get as much of God’s Word in us as possible.
God’s Word is forever settled in Heaven. His message is unchanging. His timelines are in motion. His will is contained therein. "Unless thy law had been my delights, I should then have perished in mine affliction." Be a Christian settled in God’s Word!
