Spice It Up
Today's Verse:
Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits. ~Song of Solomon 4:16
Spices can turn an ordinary meal into a super delicious meal. Great chefs understand the importance of adding the right type and amount of spices into a dish to make it incredibly appetizing and unforgettable. Imagine with me a garden filled with different varieties of spices and the wind blowing from the north and south upon it. The aroma coming out of that garden draws the attention of neighbors and passersby for many miles. Our devotion this morning pictures for us the power of a life under the control of the Holy Spirit. Let us see this morning how an ordinary life can be spiced up into an extraordinary life.
We see a candid frankness.
Our lives are pictured as a common variety garden. Though we may be bestowed with gifts and talents, all of these are normal and insipid apart from the power of God. We must recognize that without Him, we are nothing. We must realize that our lives are like a car without gasoline, or an appliance without electricity. We need a power beyond us in order to be effective and powerful.
We see a consuming fullness.
“Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden.” Wind is a common metaphor for the Holy Spirit. We must be consumed with a desire and constant prayer for the Holy Spirit to blow from all directions upon our lives. The north wind and south wind speaks of the Spirit’s power being unhindered and having complete liberty to blow in our lives. We need the Spirit to blow life into the dry, dead old bones of ours. Jesus said, “The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth” (John 3:8a). We should not crave the fullness of the Spirit just one time, but at all times. We should not crave for the fullness of the Spirit on one part of our life, but on the entirety of our life. “O north wind and south wind, blow upon my garden!”
We see a captivating fragrance.
He prayed that the winds would blow so that the spices thereof may flow out. We are a sweet-smelling savor of Christ to the saved and unsaved. The fragrance of a Spirit-filled life is meant to flow out and touch other people everywhere. Does your life contain spices that can touch the lives of people? Does your life have so much of the Holy Spirit that when the wind blows, the spices flow out in abundance? Our testimony, witness, and influence must be so nurtured and protected that when the wind of the Spirit blows, the sweetness and aroma flow out in all directions.
We see a contented fellowship.
When our lives are consumed with the Spirit and our fellowship with our Lord is so strong, we desire more of Him and not less of Him. "Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits." Is Jesus welcome in the garden of your life? Can He be found enjoying the fruit that is coming forth? “I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing,” (John 15:5).
May our prayer this morning be for the wind of the Spirit to blow from all directions upon the garden of our life so that the spices may flow out. May those spices influence and testify of the saving power of Christ to change the lives of lost sinners. Don’t be content with being a common garden variety. Be a garden where the spices flow out!
