Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) ~Hebrews 10:23
Many times, the storms and uncertainties of life can throw us off course in our walk with God. When this happens, we can become unsure of ourselves, become indecisive, and find ourselves withdrawing from serving the Lord and fellowshipping with His people. How do we overcome these challenges in our life? What do you do when the feeling to quit is stronger than the desire to stay? Our Scripture this morning gives us that remedy. Let us see how we can hold steady when things around us are not.
We are reminded of Jesus that "he is faithful that promised." Jesus promised to be with us to the end of the world. He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. He is faithful in taking our heavy burdens and giving us His yoke, which is easy and light. In His pattern, He models faithfulness for us. Jesus did not wilt under pressure, disappointment, or betrayal. He remained faithful in His calling and task. We have a reliable Partner Who stands alongside of us in the storms of life.
“Let us hold fast the profession of our faith.” Our profession of faith is when we first called upon the name of the Lord to save us. When we asked the Lord to save us, we anchored our soul to the haven of rest. This anchor keeps us firmly positioned to Him regardless of the winds, the waves, and the rain. Our vessel might be tossed in the tumultuous seas, but our anchor remains strong. Our profession of faith is completely dependent upon Jesus holding us! Our responsibility is to hold tight! He will keep us from falling! He makes sure that the cables tied to the anchor do not come loose. We just need to hold steady.
We must hold fast without wavering. When the winds are blowing hard, the rain is coming down in buckets, and the storm is fierce and unrelenting, don’t doubt God! Don’t waver about His love for you: God loves you! Don’t waver about His strength: He is great and mighty! Don’t waver about the certainty of God’s promises: they are true and never-changing! Don’t waver about what you cannot see: keep your eyes on Him! We must rid ourselves of thoughts and feelings that vacillate about God.
In verse 22, we are admonished to draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith. Storms and uncertainties are designed to draw us nearer to God. They are God’s tools to teach us to stop trusting ourselves. Drawing near with a true heart demands that we come to God in humility and sincerity. It is entering into God’s presence without pretense and not for self-gain. A true heart is one that is cleansed and without hypocrisy.
We must hold steady when storms come our way. We must keep our eyes on the Lord. We must have faith in Who God is and His purposes for our life. "The just shall live by faith." God will never fail us. Hold steady!
