Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? ~Acts 26:8
When something that is great unexpectedly happens, we might react by saying, “That’s incredible!” The word incredible describes something beyond belief, unimaginable, and unbelievable. Paul, in defending his calling and ministry, told his audience, “Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?”
“And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the spirit of holiness, by the resurrection from the dead” (Romans 1:4). Jesus’ resurrection validated that He is the Son of God: that He and God the Father are co-equal, co-eternal, and co-essential. It validated that Jesus is the God of the living, and not God of the dead. Jesus said, “I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.” The psalmist prophesied, “Neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.” Jesus rose again from the dead because He is God.
Repeatedly, we see in the Scriptures that God hath raised Him from the dead. Jesus rose from the dead according to the power of God. Science and medicine can extend life, but they cannot give life to that which is dead. Only God can give life back to that which is dead. When Jesus was raised from the dead, light returned to His eyes, breath returned into His lungs, and life was in that body which had been declared dead. As God, Jesus, in His power, came out of those grave clothes. He wrapped the napkin that had been around His head, neatly folded it, and placed it by itself. He walked out of that tomb unassisted. He showed Himself alive to over 500 witnesses. Jesus is alive! Jesus is the power of the resurrection.
The resurrection gives hope, lively hope, for sinners to be saved. Peter said that we are begotten again "unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” Paul proclaimed, “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9). Faith in the death and resurrection of Christ is the means to being saved. Every sinner who calls on the name of the Lord can be saved from his sins and from eternal separation from God.
The resurrection message is what we are to proclaim throughout the world. The gospel message preaches that Christ died and rose from the dead. Through church planting and the winning of souls, the resurrection message gives living hope and transformation of lives. It opens the blinded eyes of sinners to a God Who loves them and wants them to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. We have a purpose that is urgent. We have a purpose that is inspiring. We have a purpose that must be fulfilled. This Easter, be renewed in your heart that sinners need to be saved and hear the message of the gospel. Like Paul, let’s excitedly proclaim, “Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead?”
