I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture. ~John 10:9
Jesus used many metaphors to drive home an important principle about His deity and Person. The setting for John 10 was the Jews' rejection of a man who was born blind, but had been healed by Jesus. This man miraculously was given sight. Not only did the Jews reject this man, but the deity of Jesus was also rejected. As the crowd assembled about Him, Jesus used this as an opportunity to help everyone visualize Jesus as a door.
The door He referred to was the doorway of a sheepfold. The doorway of a sheepfold was a one-way entry and exit. The shepherd would stand at the doorway at the end of a day as the sheep made their way back in. Those sheep could enter without restriction. As soon as the last sheep entered, the shepherd would lie down and guard that doorway. Hence, when Jesus referred to Himself as the door, everyone who was listening vividly understood the concept. Nothing could enter that doorway without the shepherd knowing. The shepherd was a true gatekeeper. He would keep the sheep safe by guarding the doorway from predators or thieves trying to enter in. To every sheep, the shepherd is the doorway to safety and shelter. He is truly the open door for his sheep.
There was no other entrance. All sheep must come by way of the shepherd. In a similar fashion, Jesus is the only door. He is the only door to happiness. In John 10:9, He spoke about sheep going in and out and finding pasture. In John 10:10, He spoke about giving life that is abundant. In effect, Jesus is saying He is the only door to true and lasting happiness. Happiness is not found in indulgences, fantasies, and things. Happiness is found in a living and thriving relationship with Jesus. Jesus is the only door of hope. In John 10:28 He said, “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” The Jewish religious system gave no one confidence or hope for their eternal security. Everyone who places his faith in Christ as Savior has an eternal hope regarding Heaven. Once you are saved, you are always saved! Jesus is the only door to Heaven. He said “By me if any man enter in, he shall be saved.” There is only one door to Heaven, and that is through Jesus Christ.
The door of opportunity to be saved is now. The time to place your faith and trust in Jesus for salvation is now. The door of opportunity will close one day, and it will be too late. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus said, “Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me.” Jesus is more than ready to receive sinners to be saved. That should encourage every Christian to help promote the gospel and lead people to Christ. However, He is also standing at the door of every man’s heart, and knocking and asking every man to let Him enter into their lives. Don’t close the door of your heart to Jesus. Open your heart, and ask Jesus to abide with you as your Savior.
Jesus is the doorway for salvation. Discover this morning the joy in receiving Him as your Savior. The door is open: enter while there is time.
