The LORD is good, a strong hold in the day of trouble; and he knoweth them that trust in him. ~Nahum 1:7
Years ago, I was acquainted with a company that did product development for Betty Crocker Food Company. This local company was the research and development arm for Betty Crocker for new foods to introduce into the marketplace. One of the positions was the “tasting position.” The people in that capacity had the delightful job of tasting food samples all day! Can you imagine yourself tasting food all day long as an occupation? When what they tasted was really good, the food was recommended to the next level. This morning, we are considering an incredible verse that encourages everyone to taste and experience.
“The LORD is good”! That is a statement of fact. In all things, the Lord is good. In good times and bad times, the Lord is good. In good health and bad health, the Lord is good. The Lord is the essence of all good. When God finished creation, He looked upon His perfected work and said, “It was very good.” He makes everything beautiful in His time. He makes the ugly beautiful. He makes the crooked straight. He is our shelter in the time of storm. He saves and keeps us. Yes, the unchangeable reality is that “the LORD is good”!
He is “a strong hold in the day of trouble.” The Lord is a city whose walls are unscalable by the enemy. His walls are impenetrable to the fearsome waves. “The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.” The safest place to be at all times is in the Lord. The only way that we can withstand the assaults and threats of the enemy is by finding shelter in the Lord. Even though we can hear the howling winds, the beating of the torrential rain, and the lightning as it flashes near us, we are safe in the day of trouble.
“He knoweth them that trust in him.” God is closer, sweeter, and nearer to those who have complete faith in Him. Trusting God is giving Him the keys to the car and the driver’s seat to be in control. It is allowing God to navigate and lead us. It is giving Him complete say on the outcome. It is obeying what He tells us to do and accepting the results that He gives us. It is realizing that whatever God does and gives us is better than what we deserve. It is not allowing the tangible results to affect our judgment, but knowing that what God is doing for us is best and appropriate for us.
Have you tasted that the Lord is a stronghold in the day of trouble? If you have, then you know that the Lord is good. If not, let go of any reservations that you have, and experience that the Lord is good!
