The Right Mind

Today’s Verse:

And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid. ~Mark 5:15

Are you someone who has a sound mind? This means that your thoughts and passions are under control. It implies the idea of being sober-minded, sane, and in the right frame of mind. This morning, we see a man who is sitting next to Jesus who is described as being in his right mind. Let us see what it means to have the right mind when it comes to being a Christian and a disciple of our Lord.

We see the demonized.

“And when he was come out of the ship, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.” We are given a very vivid description of a man filled and controlled by demons. They were filthy demons that led this man to say and do things that were corrupt, vile, nasty, and indecent. They were fierce demons. This man could not be fettered, bound, or tamed. He had incredible strength because of the demonic presence. He was restless, he cried day and night, and he was violent to himself and to others. This man was in a pitiful and seemingly helpless state.

We see the delivered.

Jesus comes to this man and takes control of the situation. First, Jesus asserts His authority as God and commands the unclean spirit to come out of the man. Second, Jesus commands the unclean spirit to identify itself. Its name was Legion, which indicated that this man was possessed by over 6,000 demons! Jesus commands the demons to come out of the man and casts them into a herd of 2,000 swine. With the power of His Word, Jesus overcomes these terrible demonic entities and gives this man complete deliverance in his soul, mind, and body.

We see the devotion.

As people come to see what had happened to this man, they see him sitting, clothed, and in his right mind. A right mind is a saved mind. A truly saved person is under the power of God. A right mind is a sanctified mind. This man is clothed. Jesus clothes us in a robe of righteousness when we are saved. This mas is not filled with filthy thoughts, but, instead, every thought is brought captive to the obedience of Christ. A right mind is a serene mind. He has the peace of God controlling him. A right mind desires to be with Jesus. This man wants to be with Jesus. We see that the local people are not happy about the loss of the swine and suspect about the change in the man’s life. When a person truly gets saved, there is a special devotion that he has for the Lord.

We see the diplomat.

“And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel.” Jesus has to depart to go back to the other side of Galilee. He instructs this man to go home to his family and friends and to tell them what the Lord had done for him. However, this man is filled with a great soulwinning zeal and publishes throughout all the cities of that area the great things that Jesus did for him. This man is a flaming ambassador, or diplomat, of the gospel. You are in the right mind when you boldly tell others what the Lord has done in your life. The right mind is filled with a passion for preaching the gospel and doing the will of God.

A right mind is a Christ-centered mind. Guard your mind from satanic and worldly infiltration. Gird up the loin of your thoughts. Think always on the Word of God and advancing the cause of Christ. Strive always to be of a right mind.

Have a Christ-minded God Morning!
