Today’s Verse:
As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle; ~John 29:4
A secret is something that is hidden from the view and understanding of others. It is a hidden answer, fact, idea, or solution. We sometimes whisper about a secret pathway to a destination; a path that only a few know about. We sometimes murmur of secret plans to refer to something planned out that is hidden from other people. Job refers to the secret of God. By this, he is speaking of the privileged advice, counsel, and presence of God in his life. By this term, let us see the impact that the secret of God had in his life.
It was the source of his devotion.
“When his candle shined upon my head, and when by his light I walked through darkness; As I was in the days of my youth, when the secret of God was upon my tabernacle.” The secret of God was Job spending time in the holy presence of God. The candle of the Lord is His Word that is a lamp to our feet and light to our path. There in his tent, he had a special place where he met with God. There in that place, the secret of God, or His presence, came on Job. The secret of God drew Job close to the Lord. He was “a man [who was] perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil” (Job 1:1). Early in life, he practiced the habit of having God’s presence in his life. The more time we spend in His presence, the more of His presence is upon us.
It was the source of his dignity.
The secret of God gave him respect with his children, princes, nobles, the poor, and the people of his city. Job was respected because of his walk with God. He was respected because of his worship of God. He was respected because of his work for God. Young and old alike arose and gave him deference. When he spoke, his words were like apples of gold in pictures of silver. When he gave counsel, people listened carefully and absorbed every word that he spoke. The secret of God gave him insight in counseling and helping others.
It was the source of his direction.
“I was eyes to the blind, and feet was I to the lame. I was a father to the poor: and the cause which I knew not I searched out.” Job found his purpose in life through the secret of God. He was a servant to other people. He helped those who were very disadvantaged. He helped those who were neglected. He helped those who were rejected. He helped those that others had given up hope for. He was sight to the blind and feet to the lame. His purpose in life was in serving others. He carried the burdens of others. He walked for them where they could not go. He helped them find their way when they felt like they hit an impasse. When God’s presence is on our tent, it always gives us direction for people we are to serve.
It was the source of his dynamic.
“My root was spread out by the waters, and the dew lay all night upon my branch. My glory was fresh in me, and my bow was renewed in my hand. Unto me men gave ear, and waited, and kept silence at my counsel.” The secret of God was where he received his power. It was his daily source for renewal. It was how he kept fresh and vital every day. It was where he received wisdom in order to give fresh counsel to those in need. The impact Job had on his generation is directly linked to the secret of God upon his tent.
