For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein, and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning. ~2 Peter 2:20
One of the big social emphases in our world is to “save the earth.” The goal of this group is to save the earth from climate change, erosion, pollution, and harmful toxins being put into the environment. Everyone understands the danger of pollution. If our air, food, and water supply are contaminated, the consequences can be very bad. In 2 Peter 2:20, Peter speaks about the pollutions of the world.
Satan is the god of this world who blinds the minds of them which believe not. The world system is vast, vile, and venomous. Satan’s tactics are referred to as the spirit of the antichrist. The world encroaches upon us in every area of life. There is an anti-God and anti-Christ emphasis in consumerism, education, entertainment, environmentalism, government, media, music, false religion, politics, socialism, and just about everything else. This spiritual pollution by the world is insidious, pervasive, and deadly. Peter says that it is the corruption in the world through lust. This lust is the lust of the flesh. The goal is not to try to get men to God, but to get them away from Him. This explains why Jesus said, “In the world ye shall have tribulation,” and, “Marvel not, my brethren, if the world hate you.”
The pollution of this world encourages sinful living. It promotes a love for the world. Its goal is to steal the love of the Father out of a believer or to harden the heart of a sinner against God. The pollution of this world misleads people into thinking that globalism, government, and socialism are the answer. When the spiritual air, food, and water a person ingests are polluted, they are on a slow death from poisoning. For the sinner, he becomes so blinded by sin that he develops a reprobate heart towards God and salvation. For the believer, he can become like Demas, who forsook Paul, having loved this present world. The pollution of this world is not to be taken lightly when we consider its toxic effect.
There is an escape from the pollutions of this world. It is through the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. A saving knowledge of Christ is the first and most important step. This involves repentance towards God and faith towards our Lord Jesus Christ. A spiritual knowledge of Christ is next. God has given to us exceeding great and precious promises, that by these we might be partakers of the divine nature. We have His divine power working in us through the ministry of the Holy Spirit. First John 5:18 tells us that “he that is begotten of God keepeth himself, and that wicked one toucheth him not.”
A believer in Jesus Christ has escaped the pollution of this world. We are to give diligence to our spiritual growth so that we will neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. When the spiritual virtues of grace are at work in us, Peter reminds us that “if ye do these things, ye shall never fall.” You have escaped the pollution that is in this world. The solution for the pollution is knowing Jesus. “That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection....” Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.
