Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. ~Proverbs 3:5-7
On all of our U.S. currency is the phrase “In God We Trust.” It represents the faith of the original forefathers of the United States who, in the face of harsh opposition and much personal risk, made it clear that they placed their trust in the Lord for their lives, their families, their livelihoods, and their future. This morning, we want to see an important application of wisdom: trusting God for everything in our life.
Trusting God is letting go of your fear, insecurity, and worries. It is giving God the keys to your car and letting Him sit in the driver’s seat. It is taking your hands off your decisions and letting God show you what is best. It is getting God’s mind on every matter. It is realizing that you do not have all the answers, but that God does. It is giving God a blank piece of paper, signing your name at the bottom, and letting Him write out the description. It is absolute faith and dependence. It is holding on to God as the ship is sinking and, with confidence, knowing that He is in control.
It is better to trust in the Lord than to put your trust in men. God never fails us. Relinquishment means we do not put confidence in our flesh. Acknowledging God is allowing Him to have veto power in our life. It is letting God have first place and complete say. It means we do not question God’s call on a matter, try to manipulate God’s will on a matter, or play politics to accomplish our purpose. It is asking God for wisdom in everything so that the right decision is made. How many decisions do we make without God? It is not just giving God a matter when it is a crisis; it is giving God a matter no matter what.
“Be not wise in thine own eyes.” We cannot outsmart God. God does not need our help; we need His help. It is not taking the path of unethical behavior, dishonest dealing, manipulative duplicity, or deceitful excuses. Fear the Lord, and depart from evil. The world will never call out to God for help. It will always have its backup plan, whether honest or dishonest. It looks out for "number one." Trusting God is accepting His decision and path that He has led us on.
“He shall direct thy paths.” The best path is guaranteed when we trust in God. The best result occurs when we trust in God. The outcome from trusting God is never subjectively based on our selfish motive: it is always providential because God knows best. Trusting God leads to peace and the assurance for us in all things.
Do you trust in the Lord with all your heart? Is everything in your life completely committed to Him? Will you give Him 100% and not a partial allocation? "Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him"!
