If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth; if I prefer not Jerusalem above my chief joy. ~Psalm 137:5-6
September 11, 2001 was an unforgettable day in American history. On that day, the World Trade Center in New York City was destroyed by terrorist attacks. Watching the two towers decimate into rubbish and dust was a horrific sight. The death toll of over 2,600 people at this one location alone and the many thousands of injury was still a staggering number to comprehend. The psalmist was lamenting the sorrow of being a captive in a strange country. This morning, let us be stirred about some things that should always be unforgettable to us.
The psalmist was deeply saddened and embarrassed that Jerusalem was overthrown and taken captive during his watch and generation. It was during his watch when the worship of God was diluted and watered down. It was during his watch when he and his peers did not heed the warnings of the prophets. It was during his watch when God’s commands were neglected and forsaken. It was during his watch when Jerusalem was lost to the enemy. Everything bad that happened did not have to happen that way. Chastening could have been avoided if the people had repented of their sins and turned to God. Let us be careful to not wind up being people who regret that we did not do enough for the Lord. Let us be careful of the embittered regrets.
In captivity, he made sure that he did not forget the preciousness of Jerusalem, the city of peace. There are many precious events and priorities that we should never forget as God’s people. Let us not forget bloodshed at Calvary. There, Jesus shed His blood and gave His life for our sins. Let us not forget the business of the commission. We are to take the gospel to every creature. We must guard against becoming lax with our gospel outreach. We must be on the lookout for every opportunity of getting the gospel to people who are lost. Let us not forget the burdens of our congregation. We must care for the body of believers which make up our local New Testament church. Let us remember the aged, the afflicted, the abandoned, the widowed, and the sorrowful. Let us not forget the blessing of His coming. Jesus is coming again! Let us not be found sleeping and not alert when the trumpet sounds.
The psalmist was determined to live his life different. There are critical moments that God gives us for emboldened resolutions of faith. Let us resolve to live each day as if it were our last day. Let us resolve that we are not ashamed of Jesus. Let us resolve that we will seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Let us resolve to love people and keep short accounts. Let us resolve to seek forgiveness and reconciliation early and not let things become unresolved conflicts. Let us resolve to be filled with the Spirit and impact our generation.
The psalmist decided to never make the same mistake of forgetting how good he had it before he went into captivity. Decide today that there are some things about the Christian life that should always be unforgettable.
