Voice Recognition

Today’s Verse:

“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:” ~John 10:27

Voice recognition is the ability to identify a person based on the sound and tones of his voice. In John 10, we learn that sheep have a very keen sense of knowing the voice of their shepherd. This sense is so keen that they do not follow the voice of strangers, only the voice of their shepherd. This morning we are considering the following question: “How well do you know the voice of the Lord?”

We see that the Lord’s voice is PERSONAL.

Jesus makes very clear that His voice is personal. He said, “My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” In the Song of Solomon 2:8, the Shunammite woman said, “The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.” Jesus’ voice is immediately recognized as He speaks. When we open the Word of God and allow His Word to speak to us, do we recognize His message as personal and in touch with us? Do we sense without any equivocation His voice speaking to us through the leading of the Holy Spirit? It is personal and distinct to each of us.

We see that the Lord’s voice is POWERFUL.

“The voice of the Lord is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the Lord is upon many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty,” Ps. 29:3-4. His voice thunders, is powerful, is full of majesty, breaks, divides, shakes, and discovers. His voice saves the sinner. He voice strengthens the believer. His voice beckons the fallen and wounded to return. His voice reaches across the seas and crosses continents. His voice transcends language and dialects. His voice is more powerful than the media. His voice always has the final word on any matter. His voice is the authority on all matters. His voice is eternal and unchangeable. Do you sense the power of Jesus’ voice working in your heart this morning?

We see that the Lord’s voice is PEACEFUL.

“And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice,” I Kings 19:12. The nearer we are to the city, the more we are exposed to noises. Like Elijah, we must be able to hear the still, small voice of the Lord. In the midst of powerful winds and earthquakes, we can hear the peaceful voice of the Lord. His voice invites us to come and find rest for our souls. His voice gives us peace in spite of tribulation in our midst. Are you in turmoil and in need of the still, small voice of the Lord in your life today?

We see the voice of the Lord is PASSIONATE.

Gen. 3:8-9, “And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden. And the Lord God called unto Adam, and said unto him, Where art thou?” The Lord, through His voice, longs to draw us close to Him. His voice reaches out to us when we are not in our place. His voice calls to us when we have wandered away. His voice knows where we are and passionately calls out to us. It is never the Lord Who has strayed and wandered, but us. His voice is predictable. His voice is on time. His voice is comforting. His voice searches for us even when we are not searching for Him.

Listen to the Lord’s voice. When you hear His voice, follow Him.
