Today’s Verse
And Moses and Aaron did so, as the LORD commanded; and he lifted up the rod, and smote the waters that were in the river, in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. ~Exodus 7:20
As I write this devotional, our world is experiencing a plague known as COVID-19. It is a disease and contagion that is widespread. It is officially a pandemic in that it has spread around the world. In Exodus 7-12, we have the account of ten horrifying plagues sent as judgments against Egypt. This first plague was when all of the water in Egypt was turned to blood. Where water once was available, it had become blood—real, literal blood.
We see the disdain.
The chief water source for the Egyptians was the Nile River. The Nile was one of the chief deities that the Egyptians worshipped. They believed the Nile was the source of life. In turning the Nile water into blood, God poured out His judgment against their idolatry and irreverence towards Him. God is a jealous God Who hates all idolatry.
We see the defilement.
When God turned their water into blood, all the water became undrinkable and unfit for human usage. They could not drink, cook with it, or wash with it. Their animals could not drink it, and their crops could not be sustained by it. God showed them that their god was defiled. Before long, the river gave off a terrible stench. In fact, it was an overwhelming smell of blood that covered their land. Their god was reduced to uselessness.
We see the dearth.
The people needed water desperately. They dug about the riverbanks hoping to find water, but there was none. The people kept digging, but there was no water. They realized that their god left them thirsty. When your faith is not in the Lord, all of your digging for water is in vain. Only Jesus Christ can satisfy every spiritual thirst. Their god left them thirsty and desperate.
We see the death.
All the fish, and perhaps other aquatic life, died. This river, which was worshipped as the source of life, had become a source of death. It became a death trap. The devil wants people to think that good works, religion, and worshipping false gods will be our salvation, but all of these are death traps.
We see the demonstration.
God demonstrated that He was the only true and powerful God. He showed them that their god could be changed and mastered by Him. He turned their source of life into death. He turned their abundance into a dearth. The water-turned-to-blood demonstrated God’s power over everything. The Egyptian god failed. The true God never fails. For those who put their faith in Him, He turns a sinner into a saint. He turns darkness into light. He turns us into new creatures in Christ. Jesus said that He came to give us life, and life more abundantly.
Have faith in God and His great power. The COVID-19 spread is a vital reminder to us that God wants our attention and our worship. Give God the glory and honor due unto Him. Acknowledge His mighty hand in what is happening, and trust only in Him.
Have faithful God Morning!
