Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah. ~Psalm 24:10
Have you ever played the game where you are given clues about a person’s identity, and then, you are asked, “Who is this?” Psalm 24 has been referred to as “the Chief Shepherd Psalm." It is messianic and looks to the glory given to Jesus in eternity. The psalmist asks the question and answers it at the same time. He wants everyone to know Who this is: this is the King of glory!
“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty.” He is the Creator and Maker of the world. He is El-Gibbor, the Mighty God. Strong and mighty means He is almighty and all-powerful. He’s the King Who opens the Red Sea that is in our way. He’s the King Who brings down walls at the shout of His people. He is the King Who overcomes the giants in our life through a smooth stone flung by a simple sling. He’s the King Who answers by fire. He is the King Who is greater than our storms, greater than our worries, greater than our fears, and greater than our crises. He is never weak, but always strong and mighty. He is the Lord strong and mighty.
“Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.” There is no foe who stands in His way. He overthrows armies through hailstones. He overthrows armies with an angel that goes through their camp in the night. He overcomes armies of men with men who are left-handed, men who possess only an ox goad, men who possess nothing but a sling, men who stand their ground in barley fields, and men who are on their faces and knees before Him in earnest prayer. The greatest foes that He vanquished are sin, death, and Satan by His death on the cross and resurrection from the dead. He is the Lord mighty in battle.
“Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory. Selah.” He is the Captain of our salvation. He is the Author and Finisher of our faith. As the Lord of hosts, He leads the armies of Heaven in overcoming every army and is victorious in every battle. As the Lord of hosts, He will come one day on a white horse with His armies and defeat the armies of the world who assemble to fight with Him. He is our King Who fights our battles and defeats the enemy "by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony." He is the King Who is victorious.
“Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.” He is the King of glory. He is to be celebrated now and in eternity. He overcomes so that He is welcome in leading the victory processional. Heaven’s gates and doors shout in worship and adoration for our King. All of His people surround His throne and rejoice that He is the King of glory. He is the King Who sits on His throne as the King of kings and Lord of lords. He is the only and true Potentate. O come, let us adore Him. There is only one King of glory, and His name is Jesus. Worship and adore Him Who comes that you would give Him glory.
